The 7 volumes of the Historical records of Victoria contain many extracts from the Melbourne and Geelong court registers for the 1830s and 1840s. These extracts give the name of the offender, their offence, and the punishment given. Sometimes a summary of evidence is also provided.

The court register – a database containing information about charges, penalties and final orders – can be searched at any Magistrates’ Court venue. Section 18 of the Magistrates’ Court Act 1989 outlines what information can be accessed from the register. Only matters that have concluded can be searched. It costs $25.30 to access the register.
